Waters Choice Enzymes-Breaks down Oils & Lotions

Every soak leaves oils, lotions, sunscreen, sweat, and other organic buildup behind, and that’s the stuff chlorine struggles with, causing cloudy water, scum lines, foam, and odors. Waters Choice Enzymes break that organic buildup down at the source, so your water stays clearer and more comfortable to soak in, with less work for your sanitizer.

A Natural Approach to Oil Breakdown

Oil and grease can collect in drains, wastewater systems, and other water-handling environments. Enzyme-based treatments offer a biological way to help manage these residues. Rather than simply masking oily buildup, specific enzymes act on fats and oils, breaking large molecules into smaller components that microorganisms can further process.

Water’s Choice enzyme treatments are designed around this oil-breaking action. Their role is to support the breakdown of organic material under suitable conditions. Results depend on factors such as water temperature, pH, the type and amount of oil, and how long the enzymes remain in contact with it. Enzymes are not an instant substitute for removing a spill or addressing a major blockage.

How the Process Works

Many fats and oils are made of triglycerides. Lipase enzymes help split these molecules into fatty acids and glycerol. Once separated, these smaller compounds may be more accessible to naturally occurring microorganisms. This process can help reduce oily residues over time, especially when a treatment is used consistently and according to its directions.

Enzymes are specific: a formula that works well on fats may not be effective against every petroleum-based oil or chemical contaminant. For that reason, identify the material involved and check that the chosen product is intended for the application. Follow the product label for dosage, contact time, storage, and any precautions.

Using Enzyme Treatments Responsibly

For routine maintenance, enzyme products may support cleaner drains or wastewater systems when paired with good operating practices. Avoid pouring cooking oil, grease, or hazardous substances into drains; collect and dispose of them through appropriate local services. If oil has entered a natural waterway, contact the relevant environmental or emergency authority rather than relying on an enzyme treatment alone.

Set Realistic Expectations

Enzymes can be a useful tool for managing certain organic oils, but they do not replace prevention, mechanical cleanup, or professional assessment when contamination is serious. Choosing a treatment suited to the oil and environment—and following its instructions—helps make the approach more dependable and responsible.
